What exactly is an 'unconference'?
An unconference is a participant-driven event where attendees create the agenda. Instead of predetermined speakers and topics, participants propose sessions based on their interests and expertise. This creates more interactive, relevant discussions tailored to what people actually want to learn about.
Do I need experience facilitating to attend?
Not at all! OFU welcomes facilitators of all levels, from complete beginners to seasoned experts. The unconference format means you can participate as much or as little as you're comfortable with. Many first-time attendees find it's the perfect environment to learn and ask questions.
What technology platform will be used?
As with our previous events, we will use a combination tools to run and support the sessions. Don't worry – we'll provide tutorials and tech support to ensure everyone can participate fully, regardless of their technical comfort level.
How do session topics get decided?
On the first day, we start with a collaborative 'marketplace' session where participants pitch topics they want to discuss or learn about. We then vote and organize these into the schedule. This ensures we cover what people are genuinely interested in, not just what organizers think is important.
Will sessions be recorded?
Main sessions and keynotes will be recorded and shared with registered participants. However, breakout sessions and discussions are typically not recorded to encourage open, honest conversation. Session notes and resources are always shared in our community hub.
Is there a cost to attend?
Yes, there will be a charge! However, discounts will be available for students, volunteers, and a few other groups to ensure the event stays accessible.
What time zones will sessions accommodate?
We run multiple sessions across different time zones to accommodate our global community. The main schedule focuses on EST/GMT friendly times, but we also host Asia-Pacific and European-friendly sessions. All key content is recorded for those who can't attend live.
How can I get the most out of OFU?
Come with specific challenges or questions you're facing in your facilitation work. Be prepared to both learn and share — even beginners have valuable perspectives. Join our community hub before the event to start networking, and don't be shy about proposing session topics that interest you!
Are there networking opportunities?
Absolutely! We have structured networking sessions, informal breakout rooms, and our community hub that stays active year-round. Many attendees form lasting professional relationships and ongoing collaboration partnerships through OFU.
What if I can't attend live sessions?
No problem! All main content is recorded and shared with registered participants. We also provide session notes, resource lists, and ways to engage asynchronously through our community hub. However, the live networking and discussion aspects are definitely worth attending if possible.
